The Code

The Code of Practice (below) drawn up by the Society of Editors is not legally binding on the journalist. It's inclusion here is primarily for my own benefit. Being up here keeps it one click away and ever present. It is also here for those for whom it may apply or interest.

Adhering to the code will hopefully keep the journalist away from libel cases and protect both himself/herself as well as victims. However, glancing through the little piece of white collapsible paper ever present in my wallet reinforces the duty bestowed on a journalist to maintain the utmost integrity and morality.

In saying that, the fear of libel in today's news reporting is a threat to the freedom of the press. Where mere criticism amounts to defamation in the eyes of a court then the public's interest has not been served.
